Was the flood local or global?

Was the flood local or global?

Genesis 7:12,17 The flood lasted forty days and the waters increased, lifting the ark and making it rise above the earth

Genesis tells us the story of the flood, a period in which the waters covered the land and only Noah and his family survived. However, there is doubt as to whether it was local or global. Here I bring information and arguments regarding both theories.

*Global Flood: in this line of thought, the thesis is defended that Genesis is a historical and literal book in relation to its main events. Generally, those who defend this thesis also defend the creation in 6 literal days. In this view, to depart from these foundations is to take away the authority of the word of God.

*Local Flood: here the idea is metaphorical language. The flood would not have literally covered the entire Earth, but only the "Earth" known to the author. The argument is that the Holy Bible is a divine-human book. In other words, the writer's human vision is respected and for him his region was the entire "Earth". Furthermore, it is argued that it would not be possible to place samples of all species on the planet in the ark.

With what has been discovered in Archaeology, the most plausible theory so far has been that of a local flood, since no traces of a global flood have been found. What has been found is evidence of a local flood. Archaeologist Leonardo Woolley was responsible for the discovery.

What probably happened was that God brought a destructive flood to that region, but preserved Noah and his family because of his mercy and their faithfulness. The flood occurred as punishment for the sins of the population, but mainly due to iniquity (long-term sin for which there is no repentance).

In future articles we may address this subject in more detail. May God bless your life and may you draw closer to Christ each day. Maranatha!
